Widely known as Kakter, he is a calm and composed person with a warm and easygoing nature. He is the youngest among his siblings and was raised by a single mother following his parents’ divorce.
As the pampered youngest child, he was somewhat spoiled during his early years. However, that never came in the way of his education or his desire to learn. Today, he is one of the company’s highly qualified guides and a true treasure to the team.
After completing his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from North Bengal University, his enthusiasm for higher education led him to pursue a Master’s degree in Public Relations at Punjab University.
Upon returning from university, he began his professional journey as a trainee Bhutanese guide. For a year, he shared his knowledge by teaching iconography and Buddhism-related subjects, an experience that further deepened his understanding and appreciation of Bhutanese culture and heritage.
His career took a new direction when he received an opportunity from Wind Horse Tours, Treks and Expeditions to lead Buddhist groups. This opened the door to a new chapter in his life, and he became one of the company’s dedicated guides.
When the COVID-19 pandemic brought tourism to a standstill, Kakter took on a different responsibility to sustain himself and contribute to the industry. He joined the Bhutan Taxi Association as its Executive Director, where he served for more than a year.
When tourism finally resumed, his love for guiding drew him back to the profession he had always cherished. He rejoined the company and returned to doing what he loves most—meeting people from around the world and introducing them to the beauty, culture, and stories of Bhutan.
Life, however, has also brought him its share of challenges. His married life came to an unexpected end when his wife moved to Australia, leaving their beloved son in his arms. Despite the changes life has brought, Sonam has embraced his role as a father with love and responsibility.
Today, he continues to guide travellers with the same passion and enthusiasm, while happily raising his son. His journey is one of education, perseverance, unexpected turns, and above all, a deep love for people, culture, and the guiding profession.
