Tibet was once an independent country, unified under King Songtsan Gampo in the 7th century. The Dalai Lamas headed the Tibetan government along with a line of spiritual leaders from the 1640s until the 1950s. Today, the People’s Republic of China administers Tibet.
Tibet is one of the most remarkable places in Asia to visit. Tibet has many monasteries, breathtaking high-altitude trek routes, stunning views of the world’s highest mountains, and very friendly Tibetan people.
