Lhuentse

Eastern Bhutan

Lhuentse, also known as the Kurtoe region, is an isolated district in the north-east of Bhutan. Many of its sizeable villages sit on ridge tops, and most of the district lies in the subtropical zone, so the landscape is greener and warmer than in the high west.

The women of Kurtoe are well known for their weaving skills, and textiles from the district are prized across the country. The people are friendly and welcoming, and a visit here is a chance to see rural eastern Bhutan far from the main tourist routes.
