Kumbum Stupa
The Kumbum is the landmark of Gyantse. It rises over four symmetrical floors, plus two upper levels, and is capped with a golden dome. It was built in the 15th century and is known as the largest chorten in Tibet.
Inside, about 70 chapels spiral up through the levels and many are decorated with Newari-influenced murals and statues. Climbing the structure is a kind of pilgrimage in itself.
The stupa is a key part of the Pelkor Chode complex.
