Everest North Area (Rongphu Face)

Everest North Face Area

The north side of Everest, in Tibet, is reached from Tingri via Shegar and the Rongphu valley. The famous Rongphu Glacier flows from the north face, and Rongphu Monastery at about 4,980m is the traditional starting point.

Visitors drive to Base Camp, which has a tent camp and an open view of the north face of Everest, rising 3,600m above. In the clear mornings the view is spectacular.

The area is high and cold, with strong winds, so warm clothing is essential and time to acclimatise is advisable.
