Tsurphu
Karmapa Monastery
Tsurphu is the seat of the Karmapa, head of the Karma Kagyu school, in the Tolung valley about 70km west of Lhasa. It was founded in 1189 by the first Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa, and it became one of the great monasteries of Tibet.
The monastery was heavily damaged in the 1960s and has been rebuilt. It sits at a high altitude on a sloping hillside, with prayer flags above it.
It is usually visited as a half-day trip from Lhasa, and gives a look at the Kagyu tradition.
