Reting Monastery
Reting Monastery lies north-east of Lhasa, in a valley of juniper forest. It was founded in 1056 by Dromtonpa, the chief disciple of Atisha, and is the first monastery of the Kadampa tradition, which later fed into the Gelug school.
In more recent history it was the seat of a succession of regents of Tibet. The setting amid old juniper trees is one of its attractions.
The road to Reting is long and winding, so the visit is normally a full day from Lhasa.
