Phuentsholing
Southern Bhutan
Set at the foothills of the Himalayas, Phuentsholing is a lively frontier town and Bhutan’s main southern gateway. It sits directly beside Jaigaon, in West Bengal, India, and serves as an important commercial and trading centre for Bhutan and its neighbours. The two towns share a busy border, but crossing the ornate Bhutan Gate brings visitors into a noticeably different setting, with Bhutanese architecture and traditions alongside the energy of a border city.
Phuentsholing is about a five- to six-hour drive from Thimphu and Paro International Airport. It can also be reached by road from Bagdogra, Darjeeling and Sikkim, with journey times depending on the starting point, traffic and road conditions. For many visitors, the town is the beginning or end of an overland journey through Bhutan. From the warm, subtropical plains, the road climbs north through forested hills toward the country’s cooler mountain valleys.
Although often treated as a transit stop, Phuentsholing has several worthwhile places to visit. In the town centre, Zangto Pelri Lhakhang represents the celestial abode of Guru Rinpoche. The temple’s levels contain statues and paintings connected with Buddhist teachings and Bhutanese spiritual history. The ground floor features Guru Rinpoche and his eight manifestations, with paintings depicting the life of the Buddha. Higher levels contain figures including the eight Bodhisattvas, Avalokiteshvara and Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, while the top floor is dedicated to Amitabha Buddha.
Above town, Kharbandi Goemba, also known as Rinchending Goemba, offers a peaceful contrast to the busy streets. Founded in 1967 by the Royal Grandmother, Ashi Phuntsho Choden, the monastery contains paintings illustrating the life of the Buddha and statues of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and Guru Rinpoche. Its garden is a lovely place to pause, with broad views over Phuentsholing and the plains of India.
The town’s markets and streets reflect its cross-border character, with Bhutanese, Indian and Nepali influences visible in local food and daily life. Visitors can also explore the Amo Chhu Crocodile Breeding Centre, a riverside facility where crocodiles and gharials can be seen.
Phuentsholing is more than a gateway: it is a meeting point between Bhutan and the South Asian plains. Take time to visit its temples, enjoy the views from Kharbandi and experience the town’s lively border atmosphere before continuing into the mountains.
