Namtso Lake
Namtso Chukmo - The Heavenly Lake
Namtso, meaning “Heavenly Lake”, is one of the largest salt lakes in Tibet and one of the most sacred lakes for Tibetan Buddhists. It lies north of Lhasa at an altitude of about 4,700m, with the Nyenchen Tanglha range rising to the south.
Pilgrims travel here, especially in the Year of the Sheep, to walk the shore and circumambulate the lake. Nomads graze their yaks on the grassland around it, and prayer flags and mani stones mark the shore.
Visitors usually come for the lake, the mountain views and the nomad grasslands. Weather changes fast and the altitude is high, so it is best to be well acclimatised.
