Kumbum or Taer Si
Kumbum
Kumbum, known in Chinese as Taer Si, is a large Gelug monastery near Xining, in the Huangzhong area on the edge of the Amdo highlands. It stands at the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school, and is one of the six great Gelug monasteries.
The monastery grew around a stupa said to mark the spot of his birth. It holds many chapels, a large prayer hall, and is known for butter sculptures and colourful murals.
Today Kumbum is easy to reach from Xining and is a major pilgrimage site as well as a popular stop for visitors on the way to the Amdo grasslands.
