Kirtipur
The historic town of Newars
Kirtipur is an old Newar town built along a ridge a few kilometres south-west of Kathmandu. It has kept much of its traditional character, with brick houses, tiled roofs and narrow paved lanes.
The best-known building is the Bagh Bhairab temple, an old Hindu shrine dedicated to Bhairab in the form of a tiger. The town also has a Buddhist stupa, Chilancho Stupa, and other small shrines tucked between the houses.
A visit is a quiet contrast to the busier old cities. Visitors usually walk the lanes, look at the temples and take in views over the valley from the ridge.
