Patan

The city of beauty

Patan, also known as Lalitpur, lies just across the Bagmati river from Kathmandu. It is one of the three old royal cities of the valley and has long been known for its Buddhist and Hindu heritage and its skilled craftspeople, especially metal casters and woodcarvers.

The heart of the city is Patan Durbar Square, a close cluster of pagoda temples, stone statues and the old palace buildings. Away from the square, narrow lanes lead to hidden courtyards (bahal), small shrines and Buddhist monasteries, some of them centuries old.

Visitors can spend a pleasant half day walking between the square, the Golden Temple, Kumbheshwar and the craft workshops. Many people also come to buy Tibetan and Nepali handicrafts, thangkas and metalwork.
