Drubthub Nunnery
Sites along Chagpo Ri
Drubthub Nunnery, also called Drubthop Lhakhang, stands on the south-eastern side of Chagpo Ri, the hill opposite the Potala. It is a small temple and nunnery connected with Thangtong Gyelpo (1385 to 1464), the iron bridge builder.
Thangtong Gyelpo was a remarkable figure in Tibetan history, remembered as a medic and engineer who built iron suspension bridges, and as the founder of Tibetan opera. His devotees still honour him here.
Visitors can see a small shrine and the nuns at their daily practice, and combine the visit with the neighbouring cave temple at Drak Lhalupuk.
