Dodey Drak Monastery hike

A day hike from Thimphu

Hike to Dodeydra Monastery

A peaceful uphill walk through pine forest, with prayer flags and open views over Thimphu Valley, leads to the secluded monastery. The climb takes around two hours from the trailhead; allow roughly half a day for the outing, including time at the top.
It is around 5km hike but slightly shorter and much steeper if you start at Jungshina. It is better to start from Dechencholing and on the return end in Jungshina with steeper downhill.

Dodeydra Monastery

Also spelled Dodedrak or Dodeydrak, the monastery is tucked into a quiet mountain hollow above the city. Its main temple is built beside a dramatic split rock, with painted walls and sacred sites that reflect the monastery’s long Buddhist heritage. Dodeydra is often translated as “Cave of Scriptures,” and local tradition tells of a sacred text hidden within the rock. The monastery remains a place of study and prayer for resident monks, so visitors are asked to be respectful and follow local guidance.

Staying at the monastery

Visitors may be able to stay overnight in the monastery guesthouse, turning a short hike into a rare opportunity to experience the quiet rhythm of monastic life. The accommodation is simple, with basic rooms and shared or modest facilities; it is not a hotel. Guests may be offered simple meals and, when appropriate, the chance to observe prayer ceremonies. Availability and arrangements should be confirmed in advance through a local guide or tour operator. Pack light, bring warm layers, and be prepared for a basic stay.
