Goenpai Drubchen is held annually at Trongsa Dzong and is one of Bhutan’s most sacred religious observances. Drubchen—derived from drub (to practice or accomplish) and chen (great or grand)—may also be spelled Drupchen or Dromcho.

About the festival
This three-day tantric ritual is dedicated to Pel Yeshey Goenpo (Mahakala), the wrathful protective deity of Bhutan. Throughout the festival, monks and lay practitioners (gomchen) perform sacred mask dances, believed to invoke the deity’s presence and bestow powerful blessings upon all who witness them.
Ancient chants and deeply immersive rituals are carried out to ward off negative forces and to ensure the well-being, harmony, and protection of the community. Goenpai Drubchen typically takes place between the 15th and 20th day of the 11th month of the Bhutanese lunar calendar.
