Samdrup Jongkhar
Eastern Bhutan
In Bhutan’s far southeast, Samdrup Jongkhar is a subtropical border town beside the Indian state of Assam. As one of the country’s main overland gateways, it is an important centre for trade and a starting point for journeys into eastern Bhutan. The town’s warm climate, busy markets and mix of Bhutanese and Indian influences give it a different feel from the cooler mountain towns farther north.
The town is compact and easy to explore. Near the border, Zangto Pelri Lhakhang is a three-storey temple representing Guru Rinpoche’s celestial abode. Its shrine rooms contain Buddhist statues and paintings, offering a peaceful place to pause amid the movement of the town. The Bhutan Gate marks the border crossing and provides a distinctive landmark at the heart of local life and trade.
A short drive uphill brings visitors to Dewathang, a small town with a notable place in Bhutanese history. It is also home to the Chökyi Gyatso Institute, a Buddhist learning centre set in a quieter landscape above the plains. Nearby, forested areas offer opportunities for birdwatching; the region is known for its rich variety of birdlife.
Samdrup Jongkhar is often a gateway rather than a destination for an extended stay, but it rewards visitors who take time to look around. Its border markets, temples and subtropical surroundings offer a glimpse of a more connected, commercial side of Bhutan. From here, the road climbs north toward Trashigang and the eastern valleys, with the journey gradually leaving the plains for forested hills and mountain scenery.
