Bumthang
Central Bhutan
Bumthang is both a district in central Bhutan and the name commonly used for the area around Jakar Dzong. Often called Bhutan’s spiritual heartland, it is known for its ancient temples, important pilgrimage sites and peaceful mountain scenery. The district’s four main valleys—Choekhor, Tang, Chumey and Ura—each have their own landscapes and local character. Jakar, the main town and administrative centre, sits in Choekhor Valley.
The name Bumthang is commonly translated as “beautiful field.” One traditional explanation connects thang with a flat field or plain, and bum with a bumpa, a ritual vessel for holy water. The name is also associated with the shape of the valley.
Valleys, villages and scenery
Bumthang’s broad valleys open onto fields, orchards and grazing land, framed by forested hills and high mountain peaks. Streams run through the countryside, linking villages and farmland. Visitors can explore the valleys at a gentle pace, stopping at villages, temples and viewpoints along the way.
Each valley offers a different experience. Choekhor, where Jakar is located, is a convenient base for visiting many of the district’s best-known temples. Tang is associated with the Buddhist master Pema Lingpa and the sacred Mebar Tsho, often called the Burning Lake and where one of Windhorse Tours’s Horse Ranch is located. Chumey is known for its weaving tradition, while Ura is celebrated for its highland scenery and traditional village life.
Sacred sites and living heritage
Bumthang has a special place in Bhutanese Buddhist tradition. The district is home to long-venerated temples and monasteries, including Jambay Lhakhang, Kurjey Lhakhang and Tamshing Lhakhang. These sites remain active places of worship, and their annual festivals bring communities together for religious ceremonies, mask dances and celebrations.
According to Bhutanese tradition, Guru Rinpoche visited Bumthang in the eighth century at the invitation of King Sindhu Raja, who was gravely ill. Stories of the king’s recovery and Guru Rinpoche’s spiritual activities are closely connected to the region’s sacred sites. Bumthang is also the birthplace of Pema Lingpa, one of Bhutan’s most revered Buddhist masters and treasure revealers.
Local life, food and crafts
Farming and livestock remain part of daily life in Bumthang. The fertile valleys produce buckwheat, wheat and potatoes, while dairy farming supports local households. Depending on the season, visitors may see fields being planted or harvested and find regional ingredients featured in local meals.
Bumthang is particularly known for yathra, brightly coloured woollen cloth traditionally woven in Chumey. The fabric is used for clothing, blankets and household items, and visitors may see weaving demonstrations or finished pieces in local shops. Bumthangkha is widely spoken in the district, alongside other local languages and dialects.
Visiting Bumthang
Bumthang rewards visitors who leave time to explore beyond Jakar. A visit can combine temple visits, village walks, scenic drives and time to experience local food and crafts. The district’s religious sites are still places of worship, so modest clothing and respectful behaviour are appreciated. Festivals, weather and road conditions can affect travel plans, particularly in the mountain valleys; checking local conditions before setting out can help visitors make the most of their stay.
There are accommodations available in Tang valley, as well as Chumey and Ura valleys.
