What happens each day

1. Day 1 22 Dec 2026

   Day 1: Opening Processions and Blessings

   The Tsechu begins with an early morning procession as monks of the Rabdey carry sacred relics and instruments into the monastery courtyard. Pilgrims gather to receive blessings, and the first mask dances (Cham) commence, setting a solemn yet festive tone for the days ahead.

2. Day 2 23 Dec 2026

   Day 2: Mask Dances and Community Performances

   The second day is filled with a vibrant sequence of Cham dances performed by monks, interspersed with folk songs and traditional dances staged by local schools and community groups. The courtyard buzzes with colour and music as stories of good triumphing over evil unfold before onlookers.

3. Day 3 24 Dec 2026

   Day 3: Guru Tshengye Dance and Thongdrel Unveiling

   On the final day, monks perform the revered Guru Tshengye dance along with other closing rituals. At dawn, the giant sacred thangka (Thongdrel) is unveiled, drawing crowds who believe that a single glimpse of it cleanses onlookers of their sins, bringing the festival to a powerful close.

Before you go

• Dress Respectfully Wear modest, comfortable clothing suitable for a religious event, as much of the festival takes place in the monastery courtyard. Avoid overly casual or revealing attire out of respect for local customs.
• Prepare for the Weather Bring a hat, sunscreen, and a light jacket, as mornings can be cool while afternoons may bring strong sun depending on the season.
• Mind Your Camera Etiquette Photography is generally allowed, but always ask permission before photographing monks up close, and refrain from using flash during sacred rituals.
• Arrive Early for a Good View Seating fills up quickly, so arrive well before the day's events begin to secure a clear vantage point of the courtyard and dance area.
• Carry Water and Snacks Refreshment stalls near the venue may be limited, so bring your own water bottle and light snacks to stay comfortable throughout the day.
• Respect Ritual Moments Remain quiet and attentive during blessings and the unveiling of the Thongdrel, and follow the lead of local pilgrims to know when applause or silence is appropriate.
