Krishna Janmasthami

Krishna Janmasthami is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It typically falls in August or September, on the 8th day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight of the month of Shravana. Devotees observe fasting, sing devotional songs, and perform pujas (rituals) to honor Krishna. In many regions, the night of Krishna’s birth is marked with midnight prayers, as it is believed that he was born at midnight.

The festival also includes dances, dramas depicting Krishna’s life, and the popular tradition of dahi handi, where teams break clay pots filled with yogurt. It is a joyful celebration of Krishna’s divine presence and teachings of love, compassion, and dharma.

Krishna Janmasthami: The birth anniversary of Lord Sri Krishna, believed to be the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, falls sometime in August/September. All the devotees assemble in Krishna Mandir, the ancient Krishna Temple in Patan Durbar Square, and other temples with the idol of Sri Krishna and offer prayers, flowers, food, sweets, and chant hymns too.
