Festival of Lights

Diwali is also known as Deepawali, it is the festival of lights. It is one of the major festivals celebrated by the Hindus. This festival usually lasts five days and is celebrated during the month Kartik (between mid-October and mid-November). It is one of the most popular festivals of the Hindus. Diwali symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The festival is widely associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity.

Furthermore, it is a celebration of the day that Lord Ram returned to his kingdom Ayodhya with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshman after defeating Ravan, the king of Lanka. Before the festival, people clean, whitewash and paint their houses and surrounding areas. During Diwali, people wear their finest clothes, illuminate the interior and exterior of their homes with diyas(oil lamps) and rangoli, perform worship ceremonies of Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and wealth, light fireworks, and partake in family feasts, where sweets and gifts are shared.
